[KAIMUKI, OAHU, JANUARY 2016]  Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center will recognize 29 volunteers from the Oahu Retired Teachers Association for their 20 years of volunteering as Ushers on February 21.  The recognition will take place as a short presentation before the February 21st showing of KHSPAC's Spring musical, Once On This Island and will include presenting the teachers with Certificates of Appreciation/Recognition issued by Governor Ige's Office.

Volunteers from the Oahu Retired Teachers Association and their families will be in attendance as Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center says Mahalo and Aloha to celebrate the end of over two decades of volunteer help.  Led by retired Kaimuki High School Teacher Mae Mikami, volunteers from the Oahu Retired Teachers Association have performed usher duties at the theater since 1994.  "Community Service is the main purpose of our group," says Mikami.  "We were looking for a new community service project, and since I was a graduate of Kaimuki High School, I volunteered to get the teachers organized to help out."

Joanne Libarios, who coordinates the volunteer ushers, has been working closely with the group for the last 12 years.  “Working with this cadre of retired teachers is definitely the highlight of the school year.  They are hard workers with a delightful sense of humor," says Libarios.  "Volunteers have come back year after year to support the Kaimuki High School Performing Arts productions and it’s an annual event that many look forward to."  2015 marks the end of the volunteer help as members will be focusing on travel, grandkids, great grandkids and enjoying a well deserved rest.

"We are honored to recognize the volunteers from the Oahu Retired Teachers Association," says MJ Matsushita, director of the Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Center, "We are so grateful for their help and support for our program and showing our gratitude for their service is the least we could do."
